King County Monorail Commission
Citizens for King County Monorail is advocating the creation of a citizens commission to study and prepare plans for a county-wide monorail system. Here are some of the elements of the proposed commission:
- Mission: Bring the necessary experts together with the public to create a plan for a fast, high-capacity monorail system for King County, and submit the plan to voters for approval
- Core values: Public participation, transparency, speed, and efficiency
- Board of Directors: 10-15 members selected by each of the major cities in King County, the Seattle Popular Monorail Authority, and Sound Transit. Most members do not hold other elected office.
- Estimated Budget: $20-$30 million
- Expected Duration: 1.5 - 2 years
- Planning: Multiple layers of cost evaluation
- Accountability: Specific provisions such as a cap on the amount financed, ways for citizens to terminate the project if there are overruns, and electing a significant number of board members.
Support comes from accountability.
Accountability is earned by giving voters key roles in the process from start to finish.
Voters are key decision makers in the process, not just open wallets.
