Analysis of Sound Transit’s East King County Technology Report
1.0 Introduction
In April 2005, Sound Transit released a report on technology options for new transit service to connect Seattle with various areas east of Lake Washington. Three basic types of technology were considered: Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Light Rail (LR), and Monorail (MR). As strong proponents of a regional high-speed, high-capacity transit system to connect our communities around Lake Washington, Citizens for King County Monorail eagerly awaited the release of the report. However, while we had been reassured that the report would be an apples-to-apples comparison of the various options, we were disappointed to find that the report failed to live up to expectations. In many areas the report placed monorail at disadvantages that did not square with the facts.
In an effort to gain more information to address our concerns, a member of Citizens for King County Monorail made a public document request to Sound Transit for all materials used to develop the technology comparison report. More than a month later we received 800+ pages of documents. Our preliminary analysis shows Sound Transit’s report on mode choice to be defective, has the appearance of bias against monorail, and is an insufficient document on which to base our next 50 years of transit development.
Make your voice heard! Tell Sound Transit to correct this flawed report before excluding monorail from future transit projects!
