Sound Transit Releases Report on Eastside Expansion Options

As reported in today's Seattle PI, Sound Transit has released their analysis of future transit for the East King County. The Sound Transit website includes both a summary and a detailed version of the report. We are currently studying the report and hope to get a full analysis completed within the next few days.

Stay tuned, and if you have any thoughts please leave a comment below.

When you look at all the scenario assessments in the document, all-in-all
monorail compares well side-by-side with LRT. The real problem lies with
the technical issues that have been identified in the report, some of them
that should be reviewed in more detail.

The key questions seem to be:
1) the delta on driver-operated LRT vs. automated Monorail ridership (48K
vs. 30K) - how was this arrived at?

2) the delta on driver-operated LRT vs. automated Monorail operational costs
seems low - how were these arrived at?

3) anyway you cut it, Hitachi or Bombardier, you end up single supplier.
This is certainly an issue within the industry - no doubt about it.
However, potentially questionable given that transit vehicle manufacturing
is heavy machinery low-volume affair - you don't exactly have hundreds of
thousands of them coming off the line everyday. Set vehicle design
requirements and operational envelopes, if any of the vehicle manufacturers
are at a competitive disadvantage, you'd be surprised how quickly they come
up with a solution. moreover, have them go head to head with LRT in a bid,
you'll see just how creative they become. Take RAV for example. Even
though a Bombardier team had a distinct competitive advantage going in with
Linear Induction LRT, they did not win - there was plenty of competition.

4) future parts supplier. this one is a red-herring. despite a common
track gauge, there are plenty of other vehicle interfaces/proprietary
technologies that force supplier lock-in. As well, replacement vehicles can
be built to specification by numerous suppliers. Again, the RAV for
example, Bombardier had a distinct competitive advantage, but their team
didn't prevail.

5) here's the most troubling conclusion: why is the Green Line not built to
accomodate interlining with additional monorail routes? if this statement
is correct, folks at the SMP have got some 'splainin' to do. Is this
because of the 90' stations?

6) the vehicle envelopes don't look quite right - about 2' on the 'high'
side. who has the WASHDOT consultant worked with - either of the vehicle
manufacturers

7) before making broad claims about steel beams prototypes or ruling out
concrete guideways, again who has the WASHDOT consultant worked with -
either of the vehicle manufacturers who've worked with plenty of steel
beams, either of the leading civil teams who've built plent of concrete
beams?

these are some reasonable questions that the report needs to answer before
folks go casting the monorail option to the side.
