Why Monorail?
Monorail has many advantages that make it the perfect fit for our region:
- Speed
Monorail has the highest average speed of any rapid transit system, because it travels up above the congestion on our roads.
For example, see the timetable for our
sample system to see how it can speed
your own trips around our region.
- Capital Cost
Monorail is the least expensive way
to add significant new capacity to our transportation system.
It is 1/2 the cost of light-rail trolley systems, and up to 1/4 the cost of expanding our existing roads. This huge cost savings is made possible by monorail's unique ability to fit within existing right-of-way on our arterials and freeways. In addition, its simple design allows construction that is composed of pre-fabricated components that are quickly snapped into place
to form a complete system. This results in significant construction cost savings.
- Operational Cost
Monorail has one of the lowest operating costs of any transit system. This unique advantage is due to the fact that its elevated design gives it complete separation from other types of traffic, including cars, pedestrians, buses, and trains. This allows monorail systems to be completely automated, eliminating the cost of a human driver for each train. This fact allows monorail systems to operate without an ongoing subsidy.
- Route Flexibility
Since monorail soars above our existing roadways, it has a high degree of flexibility to where it can run. In most cases there is ample room on the side or middle of existing arterials
and freeways. This allows monorail to be built without demolishing existing homes and businesses, and without taking away existing traffic lanes from our streets.
- High Capacity
Each monorail train can hold over
200 riders. In addition, its automated control system allows very short headways between trains, up to 90 seconds, resulting in a rapid transit system that can move over 10,000 people per hour. This allows huge capacity to be added at a low cost as our region and transportation demand grows.
